Studying music theory means studying quite a few things!

First, it includes identifying and naming the descriptive elements of musical sound, like pitch and duration. Part of being a musician is knowing the names of melodies, chords, rhythms, grooves, and forms so you can discuss and work out music without depending on an instrument.

Then, music theory involves learning the prescriptive approaches of musical styles, like commonly used meters, typical chord progressions, and melodic tendencies. We can use those conventions to compose in a tradition or to discover our own personal style.

This course prepares you to use the fundamentals of music on any instrument and to communicate more easily with other musicians in any setting.
